Stan Brakhage is a pioneering film person who brought abstract expression to the work of imaging. He produced his work by building his imaging techniques using unique methods such as scratches on the 16mm frame, coloring it himself, and gluing it on the film. There are about 400 works left before his death, and the length of the work varies widely from 9 seconds to 4 hours.
Among his works, , an experimental film made in 1963, presents the image itself that is captured by a rotating projector by attaching pieces of petals, leaves, and the wings of a dead moth between two films. Also, it is a work containing the paradoxical message that living things (moths, plants, flowers) that have already died receive the breath of light and reincarnate into a new life when they are projected back onto the screen after passing through the director's touch. This work indirectly tells the viewer about creation and extinction, but the fact that director Stan Brakhage felt while touching the materials used in the process of making the film is once again a sympathetic experience for those who appreciate the work.
This paper analyzes what philosophy Stan Brakhage conceived and what omnidirectional imaging techniques he used when creating "works collaged with various objects on the surface of the film" including . As a result, he had an attitude and working method that emphasized the physical properties of the media, implemented collages and coloring using films as canvas, and built his world of work by actively and freely using colors and arbitrarily adjusting the speed of videos.
Likewise, numerous modern music videos incorporate Stan Brakhage's omnidirectional imaging technique. Music videos that reveal new attempts, such as having singularities in filming and editing methods or breaking down the walls of form, are produced using avant-garde expression styles, even if they have a commercial and advertising nature. Because music videos with a fresh feel using an avant-garde method often result in favoritism from a large number of viewers.
Therefore, through this thesis, I would like to argue that the avant-garde directing method constructed by Stan Brakhage in the past has been accumulated as a video technique over time and has continued to the present in a way that affects music videos.
