2000년대 이후 급속하게 발전한 디지털 미디어는 미술 전시뿐만 아니라 박물관 전시의 제작, 연출 및 관람 방식에도 많은 영향을 미쳤다. 본 논문은 실감형 미디어를 중심으로 디지털 미디어가 박물관 전시에 도입된 배경과 그 양상을 조명하는데 목적이 있다. 특히 국내 박물관 최초로 실감형 콘텐츠 전시관이 생긴 국립중앙박물관의 전시 사례를 분석하여 디지털 미디어가 기존의 유물 전시 환경을 어떤 식으로 변화시켜 왔는지를 살펴본다.
디지털 미디어의 발전은 유물을 다루는 박물관에서 유물 없는 전시를 가능하게 했다. 세심한 환경에서 보존관리가 필요한 유물 원본을 첨단 디지털 기술로 복제하고 변주하여 전시함으로써 원본 유물전시가 지닌 공간적, 시간적 전시 한계를 극복하게 된 것이다. 국립중앙박물관에 도입된 최초의 디지털 미디어 전시관인 ‘디지털 실감영상관’의 전시가 원본을 정교하게 복제하고 확대하는데 중점을 둔 기술적 결과물에 가까웠다면 이후 진행되는 유물전시에서는 보다 다양한 방식으로 디지털 미디어가 결합되는 모습을 확인할 수 있다. 본 논문은 공감각적 체험을 돕기 위해 기성 작가의 디지털 미디어아트 작품을 유물과 동등하게 배치하는 ‘세한’전, 유물을 모티브로 파생된 다양한 디지털 미디어 아트로만 전시관 대부분을 채운 ‘평안’전의 사례를 분석한다. 유물과 설명 중심이었던 기존 전시와는 차별된 두 전시는 박물관 관람객들에게 새로운 형태의 전시경험을 제공했다. 이러한 분석을 통해 박물관 유물전시가 이제껏 보지 못한 새로운 형태로 이루어질 수 있음을 전망한다.
Digital media has experienced rapid development since the 2000s and exerts a great impact on the way museum and art exhibitions are produced, directed, and viewed. The objective of this study is to illuminate the background and aspects of introducing digital media to museum exhibitions, focusing on immersive media. Through the analysis of the exhibitions presented in an immersive content exhibition hall, which the National Museum of Korea introduced ahead of other museums in Korea, it was particularly examined how digital media has diversified the artifact exhibition environment.
Exhibitions in the absence of physical artifacts emerge as museums utilize digital media. Advanced digital technology applications to reproducing, developing, and exhibiting original artifacts remove spatial and temporal limitations that artifact exhibitions entail because of the need for conservation in a meticulous environment. ‘The Immersive Digital Gallery’, a digital media exhibition introduced by the National Museum of Korea, evolved from technology initially focused on elaborate reproduction and enlargement of originals to a collaboration between various digital media in later exhibitions.
