Artists in the field of contemporary art are increasingly recognizing the importance of their audiences and taking steps toward actively communicating with such audiences through their artworks. This study examines the area of participatory artwork, which emphasizes audience participation or communication and interaction with audiences. In addition, this study classifies the various layers of the relationship built according to the audience's position or degree of participation in such artworks. Lastly, this study aims to discuss what kind of relationships can be formed with participatory artworks, as well as what kind of artistic experiences can be shared depending on the audience's position.
The observations made in this study are based on the Actor-Network Theory (ANT), one of the most prominent theories in the field of social science philosophy, the theory of Object Oriented Ontology (OOO), which is based on speculative realism, and the Affect Theory, which has been widely used in recent years in research studies on emotions and body behavior. Using such theories, this study explores, from a philosophical perspective, the types of relationships that can be formed between artworks and audiences in the same time and space. For further analysis, these three philosophical perspectives are applied to divide the types of relationships that can be formed between participatory artworks and the audience into community relationships and individual relationships. Furthermore, this study examines whether audiences are emotionally affected through such relationships and whether they partake in artistic experiences.
Participatory art began to grow in popularity after the 1990s, with its most striking difference from traditional painting and sculpture art being that it encourages audience participation. While the field of traditional painting emphasizes the purity or medium of art by maintaining a distance from the audience, participatory art foregoes such characteristics to emphasize communication and interaction with the audience. Another notable quality of the latter is that audiences can become a part of the artwork. Most discussions on participatory art pertain to participatory art as a social practice, this study focuses on the actual act of audience participation in artworks. In addition, although audience participation in participatory artworks is mainly considered as occurring in the same time and space, this study explores the possibility of expanding such participation to instances where artworks and audiences are in different times and spaces, specifically as a result of the widespread use of IT devices, such as smartphones.
The audiences in participatory artworks can be classified into various levels according to their location or degree of participation. This study examines the theories on dividing such groups, as discussed in previous studies. Based on these details, this study divides participatory artwork audiences into two levels: participators and spectators. In addition, the philosophical perspectives discussed above will be applied to and taken into consideration regarding these audience classifications to discuss the differences in the relationship formed according to the audience's level.
Since long ago, the perception and analysis of audiences in the field of art have been consistent. However, this study presents a new interpretation based on a discussion on various philosophical perspectives. Through this interpretation, this study offers an opportunity to expand the scope of the audience’s position or situation as perceived in contemporary art.
