A Study on the Relationships between Media Use and Social Capital in a Mutiple media Environment\r\n- Focusing on Dispositional Media Use Motives and Media Use Pattern\r\n\r\n Recently, most people use various media in daily life. Individuals are able to select and use different media and contents. This is largely due to the increased number of available media devices and developing multimedia function in new media such as smartphones. The previous research regarding multiple media use has focused on the amount of media use and users' combined use of multiple media devices. However, there has been a consistent criticism of the existig media studies in that analyzing the amount of media use cannot explain multiple media use accurately in this multimedia environment. Moreover, the socio-cultural effects of multiple media use is relatively understudied given the advanced media environment these days. To address this gap in research, a multi-dimensional approach to multimedia is needed to study individuals' multimedia use.\r\n Therefore, this study emphasizes the individual's dispositional motives of media use and the social effects of multiple media use. This study examined the individual characteristic of manifold media users and then observed the social effects of multiple media use patterns individual characteristic reflected.\r\n Based on the previous studies on emotional and cognitive variables related to media use motive, multiple media usage and the relation between media use and social capital were tested in this research. This study analyzed the individual characteristics inherent of multiple media users by using 'dispositional media use motive'. In addition, 'media use patterns' variable is composed of media dependency and media usage types. 'Social capital' variable, which means the social effects of media use, is comprised of social trust and social network. These variables were revealed by the previous studies to be consistently materialized. For the proposed research question, this study conducted an online survey with 331 media users in 20s and 30s.\r\n Results show as follows; First, it was confirmed that there are three dimensions of dispositional motives including 'surveillance and learning', 'leisure and entertainment', and 'social relation control/self-expression'. Second, it was found that three dimensions of dispositional motives had the significant power in explaining media dependency and media usage types (information/news use, communication use, entertainment use). Third, it was also found that the individual disposition of media use had significant effects on social capital cariables. For example, 'social relation control/self-expression' had the strongest effects on social trust and social network. Finally, dispositional motives and media usage types had significant effects on social capital variables. This result demonstrates that individual media usage based on characteristics inherent can influence media users' attitude toward society and social activities.\r\n This study is to explore and theoretically verify that selecting the media use and the way of usage may be differed by individual inherent characteristics and that media use could have social effects in multiple media environments. The contribution of the study is to systemically analyze the relationships among social capital, multiple media usage patterns, and individual inherent characteristics such as dispositional motives. In addition, this study contributes to research on multimedia use by not only predicting and estimation the predictive validity of dispositional motives but also explaining impacts of multiple media use on social capital.\r\n\r\nKey words : Multiple media use, Multimedia use, dispositional motives, social capital, socil trust, social network, media usage pattern
