The purpose of this study is to contrast the difference between “time-shift” viewers and non-time-shifting viewers in order to discover the major factors in deciding the “time-shift” viewing. This study focuses on two specific groups of time-shift viewers, VOD users and non-VOD users at the terrestrial and cable channels. Five major variables are measured: demographical attributions (sex, age, education, and income), individual attributions (genre and channel preferences and N-screen experience), structural attributions (activity time, weekend time, and place), the amount of using media (television, computer, telephone, and etc), and the amount of viewing at the live channels. The data of this study is based on a raw data of panel-based media diaries in 2012. The data has been gathered annually by the Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI) since 2010. The media, viewing behavior, and place were recorded every 15 minutes during the continued three days.\r\n First of all, to compare and analyze the variable differences between two groups, chi-square test and independent sample t-test are used. The result shows that the differences between VOD users and non-VOD users are statistically significant in a variety of variables, such as age, level of education attainment, program genres (news, current issues, animation, show, comedy), channel preferences (terrestrial and cable channels), N-screen experience, weekend time, activity time, the amount of media use (computer, telephone etc.), and the amount of live channel viewing. In short, a user who is young, watches the news less, prefers the cable channels more, experience the N-screen, uses the computer and phone more, and consumes the live channels less, is more likely to watch the broadcasting programs by VOD mode, not live mode. On the other hand, if the user is old, consumes the news frequently, prefers the terrestrial channels more, does not experience the N-screen, and consumes the television and live channels more, he/she is more likely to watch the television program by using live mode. The present finding corresponds with the previous literatures. Also it suggests the empirical evidence that the 16 hypothetical variables could be predictive factors in deciding the mode of viewing.\r\n Second, the logistic regression is used to find out the determinants of time-shifting viewing. The finding shows that the five variables –N-screen experience, place, the amount of television use, the amount of computer use, and the amount of live channels use –are the major factors to determine the time-shifted viewing. To be more specific, N-screen experience, place, and the amount of television and computer use have a positive effect, while the amount of live channels use has a negative effect on time-shifted viewing. That is, if one user has more experience in watching the television program on the PC, or smart phone, moves the various places, and consumes the television and computer more, this kind of viewer is more inclined to participate in time-shifting viewing. On the other hand, the more one consumes program on the live channels, the less active he/she is in using the time-shifted viewing. The variables examined throughout the present study could be a critical standard when the future researcher determines on whether a user will use the VOD or not. Possible limitations are critically examined and both theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
