With the advent of GPS, it became possible to add geographical information to physical places. A variety of online services based on GPS technology have been launched. Nowadays many social network services (e.g. Facebook, Foursquare, Instagram, and Twitter etc.) introduced GPS technology to expand their potential. Communication infrastructure theory (CIT, Kim & Ball-Rokeach, 2006a) has focused on community storytelling (residents, community media, and community organizations talking about their place-based local communities) as one of the critical factors in community engagement. Many studies have shown that local residents are using new media technology as a tool for local storytelling. Moreover, it has been turned out that placed-based communication has positive effect on civic engagement in the frame of communication infrastructure. Recently geo-tagging is getting attention as a technology that has potential for local?based storytelling. Geo?tagging is a process in which GPS-enabled devices can add metadata with geographical information to various data types associating them with the relevant geographical location. Geo-tagging can be considered not only as notifying where we (or data) are, but also as a complex process of storytelling about urban places. It is an individual who tags geographical contents on places (i.e. geo-tagging) representing his/her perceptions or experiences of the specific places. Nevertheless, we can expect collective effect of geo-tagging experience since users are able to share these spatial experiences through social network services. This study analyzed demographic information of respondents who experienced local geo-tagging and examined the implicit meanings of the experience. The findings of the frequency analysis show as follows: First, since geo-tagging technology has newly appeared, the users tend to be younger than the non-users. Second, the results show geographical difference in local geo-tagging experience in Seoul. Third, the respondents who have shorter residence period geo-tag various places in their neighborhood and encounter the geo-tagged contents in their social network more often. By seeing geo-tagging as storytelling about specific places including local residential communities, the current study considers geo-tagging as a potential factor in community engagement. According to the measurement method and distribution of dependent variables, this study conducted OLS and Poisson regression analysis. The findings of the regression analysis show as follows: First, local geo-tagging turns out to be a local storytelling behavior that has positive association and impact on local media use. Second, the effect of local geo-tagging experience on civic participation is mediated by local media use. Local geo-tagging has no significant impact on other civic engagement but civic participation.
