본 연구의 목적은 코즈모폴리터니즘의 실증적 연구를 위한 다차원적 코즈모폴리턴 정향
측정 도구를 개발하고, 소셜미디어의 시민적 참여 효과에 있어서 코즈모폴리턴 정향의
영향을 분석하여 코즈모폴리터니즘 이론 및 소셜미디어의 사회적 효과 논의를 정교화하
는 것이다. 이를 위해 서울 지역 거주자를 대상으로 온라인 패널 설문조사를 실시하였
다(N=557). 본 연구에서는 선행 연구들에 대한 비판적인 검토를 통해 코즈모폴리턴 정
향을 구성하는 하위 차원으로 ‘미디어의 초국적 이용’과 ‘관용적 커뮤니케이션 태도’를
새로 제안하였으며 통계적 검증으로 차원 구성의 타당도와 신뢰도를 확인하였다. 또한
분석 결과, 코즈모폴리턴 정향 중 ‘민족적/문화적 타자에 대한 개방성’이 낮은 집단에서
소셜미디어가 초국적 시민 참여 지향에 미치는 긍정적 효과가 더욱 커지는 것으로 나타
났다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 인종과 문화 등의 면에서 점차 이질적 사회로 진입하고
있는 한국사회에서 소셜미디어 이용이 다름(difference)을 향한 연결과 참여를 유도하고
있을 가능성과 그 의미에 대해 논의하였다.
The purposes of the current study were (1) to conceptualize and test
multi-dimensional measure for cosmopolitan orientations consisting of consupmtion
transcending borders, openness to different ethnicities and cultures, global media
use, and tolerant communication attitude; (2) to test the effects of cosmopolitan
orientations and social media dependency on two-level civic engagement including
domestic civic activities and trans-national civic particiation intention; and (3) to
investigate the moderating role of social media dependency between cosmopolitan
orientations and two-level civic engagement. Online survey was conducted during
spring 2018 with 557 residents of Seoul between the ages of 19 and 59. The
results of confirmatory factor analyses showed that the measure of cosmopolitan orientations proposed in this study was valid and reliable. The results also confirmed that cosmopolitan orientations and social media dependency diretly
affected the forms of civic engagement examined in this study and identified the
moderating role of social media dependency between cosmopolitan orientations and
civic engagement. The implications of these findings were discussed.
