포털사이트, 포털저널리즘, 소유주, 이해관계, 기사 편집 배열, 버닝썬, YG 엔터테인먼트, 승리, 네이버, 다음
본 연구는 포털사이트 소유주의 이해관계가 뉴스 기사 편집 및 배열에 어떻게 영향을 미치는지를 확인하기 위해 포털사이트 뉴스 기사 배열과 기사 내용을 분석하고자 하였다. 버닝썬 사건에 대한 네이버와 다음의 뉴스 기사 배열 양상을 사례로 비교분석을 진행하였다. 네이버와 YG 엔터테인먼트의 경제적 이해관계가 투자사 관련 사건에 대한 보도에 어떻게 영향을 미치는 지 보고자하였다. 따라서 YG 엔터테인먼트 소속사 연예인인 승리가 대표이사로 있었던 버닝썬 클럽의 사회적 범죄 사건을 네이버가 어떻게 보도하고 있는지를 다음의 보도와 비교의 차원에서 분석하였다. 버닝썬 사건이 이슈화된 2019년 1월 28일을 기점으로 사건 주요 인물의 1심 판결결과가 보도된 2021년 8월 12일까지, YG 엔터테인먼트와 승리와의 이해관계(강두순·송광섭, 2017, 03, 17)에 있는 국내 포털사이트 점유율 1위의 네이버와, 명확한 이해관계가 확인되지 않은 포털사이트 점유율 2위의 다음의 검색결과에 나타나는 기사 편집 및 배열을 비교분석하였다. 분석결과, 네이버와 다음 모두 사건의 국면에 따라 배열 상에 차이가 있다는 것을 확인하였다. 두 포털사이트 모두 범죄혐의가 제기되고 알려지는 시점에서는 기사 편집 및 배열상의 차이가 미미하였다. 반면 사건이 진행되고 수사가 진행되는 시기에는 차이가 드러났다. 네이버는 사건이 진행되는 시점에서 승리를 직접적으로 언급하거나 사건 중심인물로서 다루는 보도기사보다는 승리 외 인물과 정황에 초점을 맞춘 기사를 프론트페이지(첫 페이지)에 주로 배열한 양상을 확인하였다. 네이버는 승리에게 유리한 진술이나 사건 초점이 승리가 아닌 다른 방향의 기사를 프론트페이지 선순위에 배열하였다. 한편 승리와 대립되거나 불리한 진술 및 정보는 후순위에 배치하는 등 사건의 논조와 방향의 중심이 다른 기사를 배치함으로써 승리에 대한 관심을 분산시키는 보도양상을 보였다. 수사 과정에서는 승리와 범죄혐의를 직접적으로 언급한 헤드라인의 보도기사를 주로 배열하였지만, 내용상의 논조나 인물에 대한 묘사는 부정적으로 표현되지 않았음을 확인할 수 있었다. 마지막으로 재판진행 및 판결이후 단계에서는 두 포털에서 나타났던 사건 발달 단계나 수사과정에서와 같이 현저한 차이점이 드러나지는 않았다. 종합적으로 네이버는 국면별로 인물과 사건에 대한 초점을 YG 엔터테인먼트 소속 가수 승리가 아닌 다른 이들로 바꾸며 사실 전달 위주의 기사를 배열하였다. 반면 사례에 대하여 소유주이해관계로부터 비교적 독립적인 입장에서 사안을 바라보고 중요도를 두어 보도했을 다음은 국면마다 버닝썬 사건 자체에 대해 자세히 다루며, 승리만을 단독으로 집중하기 보다는 논설, 의견적 기사와 같이 해석과 주장이 들어가는 심층적 보도양상을 띠었다. 따라서 국면별로 일관적인 태도로 사건을 조명하는 다음과 다른 보도 양상을 보이는 네이버를 통해 경제적 이해관계가 보도양상에 미칠 수 있는 영향에 대한 논의점을 제기한다. 본 연구는 포털저널리즘과 포털사이트의 소유통제와 이해관계에 따른 기사 편집 및 배열에 관한 새로운 시각을 제시하였다는 의의가 있으며, 포털사이트의 경제적 이해관계가 보도양상에 어떠한 영향을 보일 수 있는지에 대한 관점을 제시했다는 데 연구의 함의가 있다.
This study aims to analyze the arrangement of news articles on the portal site and the content of articles to determine how the interests of the owners of the portal site influence the altering and course of action of news stories. The study conducted a comparative analysis of Naver and Daum news article arrangement for Burning sun gate incidents as examples. The study attempted to perceive how the economic interests of Naver and YG Entertainment affect the reporting of investor-related events. Therefore, The study examined how Naver was reporting the social crime incident of Burning-sun Club, where YG Entertainment‘s celebrity Seugri was the CEO. Until August 12, 2021, and since the Burning-sun gate incident first came to light in January 28, 2019, when the results of the first trial of the case were reported, and Naver, the top domestic portal site with a stake in YG Entertainment and Seungri, (Naver invested 10 billion in YG in 2017, holding 9.14% of shares and became YG’s second largest shareholder, SportsToday, 2017.03.17.), The study compared and analyzed the articles editing and arrangement shown in Daum search results, which is the 2nd runner up among all domestic portal sites without a clear interest identified regarding the case.
The analysis confirmed that both Naver and Daum had differences in the arrangement of news articles depending on the development of the case. Both portals had minor differences in the editing and arrangement of articles at the time criminal allegations were first known. On the other hand, differences were clear as events developed along with the investigations. Rather than having an article that directly mentioned Seungri at the time of the incident and the case developed, Naver mainly arranged articles on the front page focusing on non-Seungri characters and context-oriented figures. Naver arranged articles on the front page in a way that was advantageous to Seungri‘s statements or the event in question focus on different contexts far from Seungri. On the other hand, there were news articles that diverged interest in Seungri by placing articles with different tonality and course of approach such as with statements and information that were non-advantageous or unfavorable to Seungri. During the course of the investigation, the headline news articles were arranged with literal titles of the ongoing situation directly mentioning Seungri and the corresponding allegations yet within the content or portrayal of the character it was difficult to catch sight of negative commentary.
Finally, during the trial and after the verdict was given, both sites didn‘t know significant differences in reporting the case development or investigative process. Overall, Naver arranged articles focused on delivering facts by changing the focus on characters and events to others who belong to YG Entertainment rather than on Seungri. Then again, Daum viewed and reported the issue from a moderately independent angle in relation to the owner’s interests and covered the Burning sun gate incident in great detail. Instead of focusing on Seungri alone, it took an inside and out reporting perspective that involved elaborate interpretation and assertion, such as editorial and opinion articles. Therefore, Naver, with its very own differential pattern of covering news and Daum who sheds light on events in a consistent manner, they both have shown to have different reporting patterns, which raises a discussion point on the impact that economic interests can have on news reporting patterns.
This study has great value in that it was able to deliver a whole new perspective on the study of portal journalism and the editing and arrangement of news articles based on personal interest of portal site owners, ergo sharing the perspective of how the economic interests of the portal sites can affect the delivery of news.
