이 연구의 목적은 공간을 분석할 새로운 이론 틀을 모색하는 것이다. 그리고 이 이론 틀을 통해 공간을 단순히 고정된 산물이나 배경이 아닌, 상호관계적 산물로 바라보는 공간 개념의 의미를 되찾고자 한다. 여기서 제시되는 새로운 이론 틀은 텍스트로부터의 독립을 주장하는 공연 이론이다. 그리고 공연 이론을 통해 되짚어본 상호관계적 산물로서의 공간 개념의 의미를 제시하고자 연구자 스스로 연구 대상이 되는 공간에 개입해 들어가 관찰하는 경험 연구를 시도했다.
먼저, 이 연구의 이론적 시도는 공간과 공연 모두 상호관계적 산물이라는 관점을 기반으로 두 개념을 이론적으로 접합해본 것이다. 이를 통해 이 연구는 이론적으로 다음과 같은 논의를 제기한다. 첫째, 공간의 상호관계성은 공간을 재현하는 층위보다 공간적 실천 층위에서 더 분명하게 나타나는 특징임을 밝힌다. 둘째, 실천 층위에서 관찰되는 상호관계적 생산은 일상적 실천과 마찬가지로 재현되지 않고 예측 불가능하며 파편화된 실천을 통해 발생하는 것임을 드러낸다. 셋째, 공간 생산에 참여하는 존재들은 현존하는 자리-하기 실천을 통해 수평적 관계를 맺는다는 사실을 지적한다.
이러한 이론적 논의를 바탕으로 이 연구는 참여 관찰 연구를 병행했다. 이 연구에서 참여 관찰은 공연 연구의 관점을 내포하고 있으며, 따라서 연구자는 여기서 실천적 연구자로서 실제 공간 생산에 개입한 주체가 된다. 이 연구는 2017년 4월부터 다음해 4월까지 1년 동안 프랑스 파리라는 도시 공간 안에 이방인이자 카페오테크라는 카페에서 신입 노동자로서 개입해 들어가 관찰한 연구자의 경험 서술로 이루어져 있다. 이를 통해 연구자가 얻은 이방인의 배역과 일상적 실천을 통해 파리라는 도시 공간 안에서의 자리-하기를 실천한 바를 드러내고 ‘제3의 장소’에서 관찰할 수 있는 공간 생산의 형식을 서술했다.
이 논문은 다음과 같이 구성되었다. 서론에서는 현대 사회의 공간 담론에서 재현 바깥에 남겨진 실천과 존재들의 의미를 외면하는 문제를 지적하고, 이를 극복하기 위한 대안으로 공간의 ‘상호관계적 산물’로서의 개념을 제시한다. 2장에서는 공간과 공연 이론을 접목하고 비교, 서술함으로써 공간이 가진 상호관계성이 왜 중요하며, 어떤 가치와 의미가 있는지 설명한다. 3장에서는 이 연구의 참여 관찰이 공연 연구 방법에서 제시하는 ‘연구로서의 실천’의 성격을 내포하고 있으며, 연구자가 실천적 연구자로 이 연구를 수행했음을 드러낸다. 4장에서는 연구자의 이방인으로서의 경험과 카페 노동자의 관점에서 살펴본 ‘제3의 장소’의 생산 과정을 상호관계적 산물로서의 공간의 의미를 바탕으로 재해석해 보았다. 결론에서는 다시 한 번 현대 사회의 공간 담론에서 상호관계성의 의미가 환기될 필요가 있음을 강조했으며, 공연 이론의 접목은 이를 드러내기 위한 의미있는 이론 틀이었음을 주장했다.
이 연구는 공간에 새겨진 사람들의 삶과 그 내부 존재들의 가치들을 상품화하고 스펙터클로 전락하게 만드는 현대 사회의 상업적 공간 인식에 대한 문제의식으로부터 출발했다. 상호관계적 산물로서의 공간 개념은 공간에 대한 대안적 이해 가능성을 제시해준 계기가 된다. 그리고 그 계기는 공연 이론을 통해서 좀 더 명확하게 입증된다. 상호관계적 공간 개념과 공연적 공간 생산의 이론화를 통해 또한 재현되지 않은 파편화되고 예측 불가능한 실천과 존재들의 의미를 드러내었으며, 재현 공간의 논의에서도 이러한 공간적 실천 층위에 남겨진 생산의 의미를 돌아보아야 함을 밝혔다는 점에서 그 의의가 있다.
This study explores a new theoretical framework for analysing space, aiming to rediscover the meaning of the concept of space as an interrelational product. It seeks to view space not merely as a fixed entity or background but as a product of relationships. This study endeavors to articulate the meaning of the spatial concept as an interrelational product within performance studies, challenging the notion of independence from the text. It observes theoretical experiments through the researcher's experiential study, participating in the everyday life of a specific space.
Subsequently, the study posits the following theoretical discussions: firstly, the interrelational feature of space manifests more distinctly in the realm of spatial practice rather than spatial reproduction. Secondly, interrelational production observed at the practice level unveils itself as unpredictable and fragmented, akin to everyday practices, not subject to reproduction. Thirdly, entities participating in production of space establish equivalent relationships through the practice of ‘spacing’.
This study incorporates this theoretical discussion into participatory observation research, infused with perspectives from performance studies, positioning the researcher as a practitioner-researcher engaged in the production of space. The study is grounded in the experiential narrative of researcher as a foreigner and cafe worker at 'La Cafeotheque de Paris,' a cafe located in Paris, conducted over approximately one year from April 2017. Through this, the study elucidates the enactment of the newcomer's role and everyday practices, revealing the manifestation of spatiality in Paris and the cafe as a form of space production observable in ‘the third place.'
This research originated from concerns about the perception of space in modern society, which commodifies the lives of individuals inscribed in space and the values of internal entities, transforming them into spectacles. The concept of space as an interrelational product offers an opportunity for an alternative understanding of space. Through the theorization of interrelational space concepts and spatial production as performance, this study unveils the meaning of unpredictable and fragmented practices and the existence of entities not subject to reproduction. In doing so, it underscores the significance of production within the realm of spatial practices, even within the discourse of reproduced space.
