The discourse of the fact of realism and the fiction of objectivity of the documentary genre lasted for about a century. From Flaherty and Grierson in 1920's to contemporary documentary theorists, numerous academic researchers have questioned if objective documentation of reality can be possible, if documentary can truly be independent from ideology of producers, and if documentary should always be an objective representation of the real world. As a result, the traditional concept of documentary has shifted and new styles of documentary emerged, such as self reflective, reality program and drama documentaries have formed.\r\nMockumentary, the most recent and innovative transformation of documentary style, is a representation of hoaxed message using codes and conventions of documentary. \r\nThis thesis research explores the issue of realism of documentary and examines mockumentary in order to reveal how reality is deformed when presented to audiences in form of documentary. For this research, “ Ze l ig,”“ The B la ir W itch Project,”and “Best in Show, ”which are typical mockumentary films, will be examined and categorized according to their intention, storytelling style, subject matter, and its function. In addition, a mockumentary video, “ How Mr. Kim\r\nOvercame His Cynophobia,”will be produced as a thesis project. Mockumentary is a genre that raises the fundamental question of realism regarding documentary by satirizing the cultural authority that documentary holds and disclose the limitation of a moving image. Researching on mockumentary will provide audience the opportunity to acknowledge the gap between the truth and fiction in moving image and emphasize the content carried in documentary form of representation should not be taken as the truth itself. On the other hand, unlike other mockumentary films that focus on humor with parody, the thesis project will concentrate on presenting the gap between the truth and fiction of the content to seek out a new direction in mockumentary.
