본 논문은 스위스를 대표하는 영향력 있는 모던 타이포그라퍼 중의 한 사람인 헬무트 슈미트의 타이포그라피 조형세계에 나타난 시적 특성에 관한 연구이다. 헬무트 슈미트는 논리적이고 디자인의 합리성을 추구하는 스위스 타이포그라피의 체계를 토대로 직관적인 리듬 표현과 시적 언어를 구현하여 새로운 타이포그라피 표현 방법과 가능성을 보여주었다. 그의 타이포그라피 세계에 나타난 시적 특성은 조형적인 관점에서 예술적일 뿐만 아니라 스위스 스타일이 추구한 디자인의 합목적성에도 부합하기 때문에 광고 그래픽이나 시각 디자인과 같은 상업적인 그래픽 영역에 유용한 방법으로 쓰일 수 있고 타이포그라피가 가진 순수한 목적성 이외의 예술적인 관점에 있어서도 새로운 시형(時形)으로 표현 가능성을 충분히 제시해 주고 있다는 점에서 매우 중요한 가치를 지닌다고 본다. 본 연구는 헬무트 슈미트의 타이포그라피 조형세계의 시적 표현 방법론에 대한 연구를 바탕으로 먼저, 그의 타이포그라피 특성을 이해하고, 특히 ‘시적 표현’에 중점을 둔 타이포그라피의 구성 요소들간의 유기적인 상호작용과 다양한 리듬적 변화에 따른 운율을 형성하는 요소들이 어떻게 활용 될 수 있는지에 대한 방향과 가능성을 모색해보고자 하였다. 연구의 진행은 슈미트의 타이포그라피 표현세계의 핵심인 시적 특성에 대한 분석연구를 바탕으로 작품을 통하여 타이포그라피의 예술적인 측면과 기능적인 측면으로 활용방안을 제안하고자 하였다. 오늘날, 멀티미디어의 환경 속에서 다채로운 언어의 의미 표현과 수용의 영역이 확장되어 나가고 있는 시대에 슈미트가 추구했던 타이포그라피 자체가 가진 순수 조형의 원리를 바탕으로 한 끊임없는 탐구와 실험정신은 급속도로 변화해 나아가는 다양한 매체와 기술의 발전 속에 영구한 가치를 갖을 것이라 생각된다.
This study is on the poetic features in the typography methods of Helmut Schmid, who is one of the representative and influential swiss modern typographers. Helmut Schmid is basically educated under Emil Ruder, and he is influenced by the so-called‘Swiss typography style’ which has logical and efficient design aspects. \r\nThrough his works of visual poetry, he suggested the new directions and possibilities in typography expression. He followed classical principles of Swiss Typography as the fundamentals and he extended his intuitive rhythm with poetic language elements. This thesis examines typographic characteristics of his visual poetry, with a particular focus on the poetic features that possess lots of potential as an extension of literatures, and as informative publications, and as aesthetic commercials. This study is an attempt to develop poetic elements based on the aesthetic value as well as on the functional value. \r\nToday, even with the recent development of muti-media,it is clear that this is always a need for fundamental design research and experiments. In terms of that reason, his typography quality will be great help for future development.
