전시 연계 프로그램, 예술가, 매개자로서 생산자, 정체성, 개방, 상호작용, 경험, 아티스트 토크, 워크숍, 오픈 스튜디오
미술 매개 공간에서 전시와 함께 운영되는 아티스트 토크, 워크숍, 오픈 스튜디오 등 전시 연계 프로그램은 목적에 따라 ‘교육’, ‘행사’, ‘프로그램’ 등으로 분류되어 발전을 지속해 왔다. 대중과 향유자를 중요시하는 동시대 사회·예술 철학적 흐름은 예술과 관객이 만나 소통하는 다양한 매개 방식을 고찰하게 하였으며 예술가가 직접 관객과 만나 본인의 전시와 작품을 매개하는 작가 참여 방식의 전시 연계 프로그램은 동시대의 보편화된 미술 매개 방식으로 자리를 잡았다. 전통적으로 생산자의 영역에 머물러 있었던 예술가는 전시 연계 프로그램에 참여함으로써 새로운 역할을 수행하는 매개자로서 영역을 확장한다.
본 연구는 동시대 예술가에게 점차 일반적이 되어가는 전시 연계 프로그램을 통한 매개 활동이 예술가의 창작과 정체성에 어떠한 영향을 주고 있는지 다각적으로 분석한다. 연구는 예술가에게 영향을 주는 구조와 예술가 개인의 실천을 관계적으로 살펴보고자 피에르 부르디외(Pierre Bourdieu)의 논의와 개념을 연구 전반에 활용하고 있으며, 문화매개와 문화매개자 논의를 바탕으로 동시대 예술가가 수행하는 ‘매개자로서 생산자’ 역할 개념을 정립하고자 한다. 덧붙여 전시 연계 프로그램을 통해 생산과 매개를 겸하게 된 예술가가 경험하는 영역으로 ‘개방’과 ‘상호작용’을 제시하고 예술가가 이 속성을 본인의 창작 영역에서 어떻게 조절하고 있는지 파악한다.
연구는 11명의 한국 현대 미술가와의 심층 인터뷰를 통해 진행되었다. 많은 연구 참여자들은 주로 미술 매개 공간이나 전시 운영 주체 측의 제안을 통하여 전시 연계 프로그램에 참여하고 있으며 이들의 매개 활동은 구조적 영향을 받는 부분이 크다고 판단된다. 그러나 매개 활동 경험을 통해 매개 행위의 예술적 가치를 발견하거나 예술가의 역할에 대한 개인적 가치관을 새롭게 정립하고 프로그램 안팎으로 적극적인 매개를 시도하는 움직임 또한 포착되었다. 구조적 종속 아래 수행되어야할 행위를 정당화하는 것을 넘어서 기존의 전문 매개자들과 본인의 역할을 구별하고자하며 창작 영역으로 매개를 불러들이는 시도들에서 ‘매개자로서 예술가’만의 잠재적 가능성을 확인할 수 있다.
Exhibition-related programs that are operated in line with exhibitions in art-related spaces, such as artist talk programs, workshops, and open studios, have continued to evolve by being categorized as "education," "events," or "programs" depending on the purposes thereof. The social, artistic, and philosophical trends of the modern society emphasizing the masses as well as people who enjoy art have encouraged artists to consider various methods of mediation whereby artists and viewers meet and interact with each other. Exhibition-related programs, in which artists meet with the viewers in person and mediate their exhibitions and artworks, have become a common form of art mediation in the contemporary society. Whereas artists have traditionally been considered as producers, they are now expanding their territory by becoming mediators who play new roles through participation in exhibition-related programs.
Research analyzes, from various angles, the impacts of mediation activities through exhibition-related programs, which are becoming increasingly common for contemporary artists, on the creations and identities of artists. To observe the structures that influence artists and the actions of individual artists, this research has utilized the discussions and concepts of Pierre Bourdieu. Additionally, on the basis of discussions on cultural mediation and cultural mediators, this research seeks to establish the concept of the role of contemporary artists as "producers as mediators." Moreover, this research also proposes "openness" and "interaction" as the domains experienced by artists who act as producers as well as mediators through exhibition-related programs, and explores how artists are adjusting this feature within their own creative territories.
Research has been conducted through in-depth interviews with 11 Korean contemporary artists. Many artists who have taken part in the research are participating in exhibition-related programs by receiving suggestions from art-related spaces or exhibition hosts, and it is deemed that their mediation activities are structurally influenced to a great extent. However, it has also been shown that these artists discover the artistic value of the acts of mediation by experiencing mediation activities, or establish new individual values regarding the role of artists, and also proactively attempt mediation inside and outside of exhibition-related art programs. Through the attempts of these artists to differentiate their roles from those of professional mediators instead of simply justifying the acts that need to be performed under structural subordination and bring mediation into the domain of creation, their unique potential of "artists as mediators" can be identified.
