공기란 무엇인가? 공기는 무엇을 '영사'하는가? 공기는 시각적 환경을 어떻게 생성하고 매개하는가? 영사란 무엇인가? 영사는 그 자체가 하나의 매체이자 환경이다. 그림자 연극부터 카메라 옵스큐라, 환등기 쇼에 이르기까지 영사는 오랫동안 공간을 변화시켜 왔다. 오늘날 영사에 대한 우리의 매력은 영화관은 물론 미술관과 갤러리의 벽에 살아 숨 쉬며 일상 생활에 엮여 있다. 이 강연에서는 시각 문화에서 영사 및 공기의 역사를 탐구하면서, 공기의 사유와 원소 미디어의 활용으로 영사적 상상력을 재창조하는 동시대 영화감독, 예술가, 건축가와의 지속적인 관련성을 예시한다.

이 강연은 스크린 문화에 초점을 맞춰 다양한 영사 메커니즘과 그 환경을 살펴봅니다. 정신분석학, 환경 철학, 건축, 과학사, 시각 예술과 미디어를 아우르는 다양한 주제를 다루면서 이 강연은 영사 예술의 '환경성'이 어떻게 교류와 관계의 장소을 만들어내는지 보여주며, 무빙 이미지를 공기의 생태와 연결시킨다.유시 파리카는 덴마크 오르후스대학교에서 디지털 미학 연구센터(DARC)를 이끌고 있는 교수이자, 방문교수로서 사우스햄튼대학교 윈체스터 예술학교와 프라하 FAMU에서 ‘작동 이미지와 시각문화’(2019-2023) 연구 프로젝트를 주도했다. 

줄리아나 브루노는 하버드대 예술, 영화, 시각학과 교수다. 시각예술, 건축 및 미디어에 대한 학제간 연구로 크라스나-크라우스 상을 받은 Atlas of Emotion: Journeys in Art, Architecture and Film (Verso, 2002)과 Surface: Matters of Aesthetics, Materiality, and Media (Chicago, 2014)을 비롯한 7권의 책과 100편이 넘는 글을 출간했고, 구겐하임 미술관, 베니스비엔날레, 휘트니미술관, 뉴욕현대미술관(MoMA) 등에 게재되었다.

 

What is an atmosphere? What do atmospheres “project”? How do they create, and mediate, a visual environment? What is projection? Projection is itself a medium, or rather a milieu. It has long been transforming space, from shadow plays to camera obscuras and magic lantern shows. Today, our fascination with projection is alive on the walls of museums and galleries as well as cinemas, and woven into our daily lives. In exploring the histories of projection and atmosphere in visual culture, the lecture illustrates  their continued relevance to contemporary filmmakers, artists, and architects who are reinventing the projective imagination with atmospheric thinking and the use of elemental media.

Focusing on screen culture, Bruno looks at a range of projective mechanisms and their environments. Her excursus touches on psychoanalysis, environmental philosophy, architecture, and the history of science as well as visual art and media. Showing how the “environmentality” of the art of projection produces sites of exchange and relationality, the lecture binds the moving image to the ecology of atmosphere.

Giuliana Bruno is Emmet Blakeney Gleason Professor of Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard University. Internationally known for her interdisciplinary research on visual arts, architecture and media, she has published seven award-winning books and over one hundred essays. Her latest book is Atmospheres of Projection: Environmentality in Art and Screen Media (Chicago, 2022). Atlas of Emotion: Journeys in Art, Architecture and Film (Verso, 2002) has provided new directions for visual studies and won the Kraszna-Krausz prize for best Moving Image Book. Her other books include Streetwalking on a Ruined Map (Princeton, 1993), winner of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies book award; Public Intimacy: Architecture and the Visual Arts (MIT, 2007), and Surface: Matters of Aesthetics, Materiality, and Media (Chicago, 2014). Professor Bruno has written on art, among others, for the Guggenheim Museum, the Venice Biennale, the Whitney Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
