창작의 동기인 모티프는 예술가의 상상력과 만나 예술작품으로 창조된다. 본 연구는 연구자를 비롯한 많은 예술가들이 오랫동안 지속적으로 말 이미지를 창조하게 되는 예술적 원동력에 대한 의문에서 시작되었다. 예술가를 자극하는 말이라는 대상을 이해하고 분석하기 위하여 상상력의 체계와 이미지의 시각적 재현에 대하여 고찰해 보고자 하였다. \r\n\r\n상상력과 이미지의 관계를 해석하기 위하여 철학적 이론들을 살펴보았다. 상상력의 이론들은 이성과 논리가 지배하던 서구사회에서 인간정신의 능동적인 능력으로서의 상상력에 주목하였으며, 가스통 바슐라르(Gaston Bachelard)는 주체가 주도하는 상상력은 선택한 대상이 이미지와 결합할 수 있는 힘을 제공한다고 보았다. ‘말’은 생명체가 지닌 활력과 교감의 동물적 특성을 지니고 인간과 밀접한 관계를 맺어왔다. 바슐라르의 상상력 이론을 근거로 하여 초월적 보편성을 지닌 이미지 대상의 물질성과 공기, 불, 흙, 물의 네 가지 원소의 기준에 의해 말 이미지를 분류하였다. 이미지와 상상력의 세계는 예술작품을 통해서 접근 가능하며 상상력에 의해 전개된 이미지가 시각적으로 발현되기 위해서는 일정한 질서가 필요하다. 사회기호학의 테두리에서 시각요소들의 규칙으로 이미지를 읽는 군더 크레스(Gunther Kress)와 테오 반 리우웬(Theo Van Leeuween)의 시각문법이론을 바탕으로 말 이미지에 관련된 작품들을 시각적 재현 요소들이 갖는 관계 구조와 전체적인 구성을 고찰하여 분석하였다.\r\n \r\n말 이미지는 4원소에 의해 분류되었고, 말은 4원소의 원소적 특성을 모두 지니고 있음을 확인하였다. 보편성을 지닌 이미지의 물질성이 상황에 따라 다른 속성의 이미지를 만들어냄으로써 시대를 초월하여 말의 이미지를 공유할 수 있음을 연구하였다. 이는 말 이미지가 예술가의 상상력을 자극하여 각종 의미를 강력하게 전개시키는 다중적 모티프로 작용하는 힘의 원천에 대한 고찰이다. 그리고 말이라는 객체의 이해와 인식에 대한 예술적 상상력의 분석은 연구자의 창조적 작품세계에서 말 이미지의 새로운 전개에 기여할 것으로 본다.
The motif of creation transforms into a piece of art when it meets with the artist’s imagination. This study started out with the question of what the creative motif of many artists including the researcher, is in continuously creating images of horses. In order to comprehend and analyze horse as a subject that stimulates artists, let’s consider the structure of imagination and the visualization of images.\r\n\r\nIn order to interpret the relationship between imagination and images, we looked at philosophical theories. In the western world where reason and logic are dominant, theories on imagination took notice of imagination as an active ability of the human mind. Gaston Bachelard believed that imagination controlled by one has a power to combine with an image that one chooses. Horses have been forming a close relationship with men with their animalistic characteristics of vitality and communion. Based on Bachelard’s theory of imagination we assorted the image of horse according to the materiality of the image with transcendental universality and the law of four elements. The world of images and imagination is accessible through art works and there must be a constant order for the image produced by imagination to become visualized. Based on Gunther Kress and Theo Van Leeuween’s grammar of visual image that reads images according to rules of visual elements within the boundaries of sociosemiotics, this study analyzed works related to horse images considering the relationship structure between visual reproducing elements and the general construction.\r\n\r\nThe images of horse are classified according to the four elements and we verified that horses have the characteristics of the elements. We researched that the materiality of the image with universality can produce images with different properties so that horse images can be shared transcending generations. This is a study of the source of power that acts as multiple motifs when the horse image stimulates the artist’s imagination and strongly develops various meanings. In addition, the comprehension of the subject horse and the analysis of the artistic imagination of artists, will contribute to a new development of the horse image in the researcher’s creative art world.
