스탠리 큐브릭, 작가연구, 아이러니, 매체전환, 형식미
20세기 중반 프랑스의 누벨바그 혁명때 제기된 문제점인 소설의 무분별한 영화화의 풍토는 오늘날의 특정 인기 장르(genre)영화에 편중되는 영화 제작 행태와 무관하지 않다. 따라서 본 연구는 영화작가연구를 통해 영화예술의 주체로서의 영화감독을 재인식하고 영화가 예술로서 가지는 본연의 가치를 살펴보는 것에 그 의의가 있다. 이에 따라 영화감독 스탠리 큐브릭(Stanly Kubrick)을 분석대상으로 선정하고 그의 영화의 내용과 형식 그리고 세계관을 아우르는 아이러니(irony)를 작가분석의 요체로 규정하여 아이러니의 영화적 의미분석을 시도하였다. 본 연구는 문학적 기반을 가지는 아이러니의 양상을 영화의 대사나 플롯과 같은 이야기 구조에서 찾는 것이 아니라 촬영이나 편집, 미장센과 같은 영화의 형식적 요소를 통해 규명하였는데 이는 단순히 영화의 내용과 작가의 의식세계를 규명하는 것에서 더 나아가 타예술장르들과는 차별되는 영화예술만의 매체적 특징을 확인해볼 수 있는 기회가 될 수 있다. 분석결과, 큐브릭은 영화를 구성하는 성분들의 다양한 대비를 통해 아이러니의 의미를 영화적으로 구축하였는데, 이는 이미지와 사운드의 부조화를 통해 발생하기도 하면 영화의 매체적 특징의 이탈을 통해 나다타기도 하였다. 또한 큐브릭은 영화의 형식적 요소의 활용을 통해 세상에 대한 작가적 논평을 간접적으로 드러냈다. 이는 때로는 서사와 연결되어 나타나기도 하고 서사의 외부에서 전지자적 태도로 드러나기도 하였는데, 영화적 형식에 기반한 아이러니도 결국은 영화의 내용에 해당하는 이야기 구조의 연장선상에서만 그 의미기능이 가능하다는 점도 확인할 수 있었다. 영화작가연구는 결국 영화라는 예술의 행위 주체를 영화감독으로 인식하고 그들의 예술적 개성을 파악해보는 과정인 것으로 이는 오늘날의 장르 중심의 영화 제작 행태가 영화감독의 예술적 가치의 상실로 이어질 수 있다는 점을 상기시켜준다.
The significance of the study is to examine real value of film as the arts and understand a film director as an artist in the film industry. To carry out this study, the author selected Stanley Kubrick(1929-1999) as case analysis object and conducted a review of literature. Through the result of reviewing documents concerning Stanley Kubrick, 'Irony' is verified as a key factor for understanding the world of works such as the tragic plots, the beauty of from and the critical view of the world. This study attempted to find out the aspects of cinematic reproduction of irony unlike other studies used to focus on narrative structure.\r\nBased on the results of the analysis, Kubrick created a variety of ironic situation on the screen via an obvious contrast between two cinematic factor. Ironic points comes from mismatch between image and sound or it sometimes appears as emancipation from medium customs. Kubrick also uses ironic code as the way of revealing his opinion to the world. In spite of independent semantic function, Irony based on cinema form is basically activated when it goes with narrative.\r\nIn other words, film study is aimed at identifying director's artistic individuality. When harsh reality of the film industry of today are taken in consideration, the unbalanced relations between popularity and artistry of film should be deeply considered again.
