20세기 후반 사이버네틱스와 정보이론을 중심으로 발전한 ‘코드’의 정보과학 이론은 팔로 알토(Palo Alto)에서의 가족 치료, 파리 기호학, 미국 인문대학에서 부상한 문화이론 등 다양한 환경에서 어떻게 그리고 왜 뿌리를 내렸는가? 최근에 출간된 책 [코드: 정보이론에서 프랑스 이론으로](2023)을 바탕으로 이 강연에서는 1차와 2차 세계대전 사이의 네덜란드 식민지에서 MIT의 전자공학연구소(Research Laboratory of Electronics: RLE)에 이르는 기술관료적 연구가 어떻게 ‘코드화를 학습하기’라는 공통의 꿈을 가진 다양한 학자들에게 영감을 주었는가를 탐구한다. 그 결과는 인문학에서 ‘이론’의 부상을 이끈 정치적 (그리고 기술적) 위기의 새로운 역사다.

버나드 디오니스소 게겐은 킹스칼리지 런던의 디지털 미디어 역사 및 이론 부교수다. 그의 연구 주제는 디지털 미디어가 ‘문화적’ 과학을 형성하는 동시에 그 과학에 의해 형성되는 방식이다. 사이버네틱스와 인문과학, 인종성과 AI, 인터랙티브 멀티미디어 컴퓨텅의 발전에서  20세기 중반 군사적 경계의  역할에 대한 논문을 발표했으며, 베를린 세계문화의집(Hause der Kulturen der Welt)에서의 인류세와 기술권 프로젝트 등을 위한 큐레이팅을 맡기도 했다.

 

How and why, in the latter half of the twentieth century, did informatic theories of “code” developed around cybernetics and information theory take root in settings as varied as Palo Alto family therapy, Parisian semiotics, and cultural theories ascendant at US liberal arts colleges? Drawing on the speaker’s recently published book, Code: From Information Theory to French Theory (2023), this talk explores how technocratic research from interwar Dutch colonies to MIT’s Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE) inspired diverse scholars with a common dream of “learning to code.” The result is a new history of the political (and technical) crises that drove the rise of “theory” in the humanities.

Bernard Dionysius Geoghegan is a Reader in the History and Theory of Digital Media at King’s College London. An overarching theme of his research is how “cultural” sciences shape—and are shaped by—digital media. This concern spans his writing on the mutual constitution of cybernetics and the human sciences, ethnicity and AI, and the role of mid-twentieth century military vigilance in the development of interactive, multimedia computing.  His attention to cultural factors in technical systems also figured in his work as a curator, notably for the Anthropocene and Technosphere projects at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt.
